Idaho State University College of Pharmacy

Post Graduate Year One (PGY1) -
ISU Rural Community Pharmacy Residency

Mission:

To prepare pharmacists for advanced level practice in community settings with added emphasis on rural and under served populations and academic pharmacy.

Background:

     The main training sites include Bengal Pharmacy, Rural Telepharmacy Locations, Wallace Drug,

Pocatello Family Medicine, and Idaho State University College of Pharmacy.  The resident spends time in Pocatello and some of the surrounding rural communities including Arco and Aberdeen.

     The residency has achieved the ASHP candidate status and began in June of 2013.  The retail clinical duties include practice management, provision of pharmacy services, clerkship supervision, medication therapy management, disease management programs, and quality improvement. The resident also provides clinical pharmacy services at various rural health clinics.  The academic portion of the residency includes student clerkship supervision/instruction, classroom lecturing, and rural outreach activities.  The resident will participate in 340B pharmacy, telepharmacy, management, and there are more opportunities available to develop and expand. 


Curriculum:

  • 13  four week rotations

  • 1-2 month elective
  • 1 month inpatient medicine at Portneuf Medical Center
  • 1 month ambulatory care

    Practice Sites


    Bengal Pharmacy

    Bengal Pharmacy, owned by the Idaho State University Foundation, is located on the college campus providing pharmacy services to students, staff and the general public.  In addition to traditional pharmacy services, Bengal Pharmacy provides full telepharmacy services to a remote dispensing site in Arco, ID.  Pharmacists at the parent site in Pocatello supervise technicians at the remote site and counsel patients via high quality video and audio connections.

     

    Wallace Drug

    Wallace Drug is a family-owned pharmacy located in the rural community of Aberdeen, ID.  This practice site provides the resident with a focus on inventory control, 340B, and Medication Therapy Management in addition to other opportunities, including experience in a critical care access hospital pharmacy.


    Pocatello Family Medicine

    Pocatello Family Medicine is a community care clinic with a focus on the underserved population.  It serves as a training site for medical and pharmacy residents, as well as nursing students and psychology interns.  Unique opportunities at this site include precepting pharmacy students, and participation in the HIV and Hepatitis C clinics.  The resident will have ambulatory care clinic, anticoagulation clinic, and refill pharmacy clinic at this site.

     

    ISU College of Pharmacy

    The resident will have the opportunity to participate in a monthly BCPS review session held with other residents in the area.  Incorporated into that session is an hour of teaching experience in which the resident will obtain a teaching certificate.  Additional teaching opportunities include giving lectures and facilitating case study groups for pharmacy students.

    • Eligibility for licensure in Idaho
