ISHP Technician Corner
ISHP believes that Pharmacy Technicians are important members of the pharmacy team and should be recognized and rewarded accordingly. All Pharmacy Technicians, regardless of your place of practice, are cordially invited to become ISHP Technician Members. Your $25.00 annual dues will help ISHP to help you reach the highest levels of pharmacy technician practice. Here’s how:
The Pharmacy Technician Initiative is a partnership between ASHP and individual state affiliates to advocate for state laws that require, as a prerequisite for state board registration, completion of an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training and Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification.
Patient safety and quality of care will improve, and access to the patient care services of pharmacists will increase if all technicians are required by law, as a prerequisite to registration to complete an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training program and be certified by the PTCB.
ASHP believes that the best strategy and only effective way to develop a qualified pharmacy technician workforce that will enable pharmacists to meet the medication management needs of patients and other health care professionals is to work hand-in-hand with state affiliates to develop and advocate for the enactment of state legislation that supports the development of an effectively trained and certified technician workforce.

The CPhT is the gold standard of credentialing for pharmacy technicians. PTCB® offers the CPhT certification to individuals who wish to distinguish themselves in the pharmacy technician field. PTCB’s certification program enables technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service. Most employers prefer, and many require, that their pharmacy technicians be CPhTs.
According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase more than 20% between 2012 and 2022. The BLS suggests that pharmacy technicians with formal education or training, previous work experience and national certification will be specifically sought after to meet these demands.
The Idaho affiliate is one of 17 that has partnered with ASHP on its Pharmacy Technician Initiative, which advocates for state laws that require, as a prerequisite to registration by the state board of pharmacy, completion of ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training and certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
