ASHP Pharmacy Technician Initiative

About the Initiative

The Pharmacy Technician Initiative is a partnership between ASHP and individual state affiliates to advocate for state laws that require, as a prerequisite for state board registration, completion of an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training and Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification.

Rationale

Patient safety and quality of care will improve, and access to the patient care services of pharmacists will increase if all technicians are required by law, as a prerequisite to registration to complete an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training program and be certified by the PTCB.

ASHP believes that the best strategy and only effective way to develop a qualified pharmacy technician workforce that will enable pharmacists to meet the medication management needs of patients and other health care professionals is to work hand-in-hand with state affiliates to develop and advocate for the enactment of state legislation that supports the development of an effectively trained and certified technician workforce.

The Certification Advantage

The CPhT is the gold standard of credentialing for pharmacy technicians. PTCB® offers the CPhT certification to individuals who wish to distinguish themselves in the pharmacy technician field. PTCB’s certification program enables technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service. Most employers prefer, and many require, that their pharmacy technicians be CPhTs.

Certification Benefits

  • Respected credential
  • Validated achievement and knowledge
  • Improved employment opportunities
  • Potential for higher salary
  • Career growth
  • Understanding of pharmacy law
  • Prestige among coworkers

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent educational diploma (e.g., a GED or foreign diploma)
  • Passing score on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)
  • Full disclosure of all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions
  • Compliance with all applicable PTCB certification policies

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase more than 20% between 2012 and 2022. The BLS suggests that pharmacy technicians with formal education or training, previous work experience and national certification will be specifically sought after to meet these demands.

The Idaho affiliate is one of 17 that has partnered with ASHP on its Pharmacy Technician Initiative, which advocates for state laws that require, as a prerequisite to registration by the state board of pharmacy, completion of ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training and certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.  Learn more about ASHP Accreditation and the initiative by visiting ASHP Pharmacy Technician page.

Idaho Technician Registration, Ratio and Certification Role

The Amendments to Rule 251 passed the 2009 Legislature and became effective at the end of the 2009 legislative session.  All pharmacy supportive personnel "behind the counter" must be registered and certified pharmacy technicians, subject to certain exceptions, after July 1, 2009.  Click here for answers to Frequently Asked Questions.  Click here to read the full Rule.

ISHP was involved in reviewing and commenting on the various permutations of the rule over the months.  ISHP led the efforts to include mandatory certification and minimum standards for technicians, and strongly supported the proposal to require that all supportive personnel should be registered by the Board.  ISHP is a member of the Idaho Pharmacy Leadership Council and presented surveys and testimony before the Board. ASHP also sent a letter to the Board.  Read more below.

Certification Matters

for Safe and Effective Patient Care and Service.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) was established in 1995 to create a single, national certification program for pharmacy technicians. PTCB’s nationally-accredited certification program delivers high quality exam and recertification services. Since 1995, PTCB has certified over 320,000 pharmacy technicians.
